That is basically the is-ought problem. This is specifically about morality, is-ought does actually work sometimes. Let’s be specific, about the scope here, we are thinking about moral directives that make a leap with no reason that justify doing so at all. Beyond moral directives is-ought can actually work Description: Arsenic is deadly. The is-ought gap is Hume’s claim that we can’t get an ‘ought’ from just ‘is’s. Prior (“The Autonomy of Ethics,” ) showed that its most straightforward formulation, a staple of introductory philosophy classes, fails.

The is–ought problem in meta-ethics as articulated by Scottish philosopher and historian, David Hume (–), is that many writers make claims about what ought to be on the basis of statements about what r, Hume found that there seems to be a significant difference between descriptive statements (about what is) and prescriptive or normative statements .   The “is-ought” fallacy dates at least back to David Hume. The idea is that one may not describe how something is and then conclude this is what one ought to do in terms of morality. In the recent Craig-Harris debate, during the Q&A portion, a young man asked Craig how he was not committing the is-ought fallacy by saying “because God exists, we ought to do this or that.”. Get this from a library! The Is-Ought Problem: an Investigation in Philosophical Logic. [Gerhard Schurz] -- Can OUGHT be derived from IS? This book presents an investigation of this time-honored problem by means of alethic-deontic predicate logic. New in this study is the leitmotif of relevance: is-ought.

One such is the article, ‘The “Is-Ought” Problem Resolved’, 2 in which Gewirth claimed to have resolved a problem that empiricists have long held to be logically intractable. Since Hume, it has been widely accepted that bridging the inferential gap between factually descriptive and morally prescriptive statements is : Stuart Toddington, Stuart Toddington.   In fact I often say that the inability to derive decisions from facts (the is/ought problem) is not a bug, but a feature. For it means that you can't avoid responsibility for the ethical decisions you make - you can't blame some kind of inexorable logical formula or book of rules, like a kind of moral log table.   The is–ought problem, as articulated by the Scottish philosopher and historian David Hume (–76), states that many writers make claims about what ought to be, based on statements about what found that there seems to be a significant difference between positive statements (about what is) and prescriptive or normative statements (about what Author: David J Strumfels.

SyntaxTextGen not activatedPdf is-ought fallacy occurs when the assumption is made that because things are a certain pdf, they should be that way. It can also consist of the assumption that because something is not now occurring, this means it should not occur. In effect, this fallacy asserts that the status quo should be maintained simply for its own sake. The is-ought problem in ethics arises from the is-ought, fact-value distinction.

It is the problem of moving from the factual to the normative, of obtaining. The is–ought gap is ebook secular subjectivists’ technical retreat. It serves as their linguistic asylum from the imposition of any moral standards.

It is their ticket to “get away” with whatever they (or their group) feel like doing.
